Extended Family Photos at Scusset Beach | Cape Cod Family Photographer

Seven years after we first got together for an extended family photo session, I was so excited when this crew asked me back to capture their growing family!

We truly could not have asked for a better night for family photos at Scusset Beach in Sandwich, Massachusetts. The weather was perfect, the beach was beautiful, and having so many years between their first session and this one made it especially fun to see how much their family has grown and changed.

Of course, we captured all of the posed family photos—the full extended family, grandparents with their grandchildren, individual families, siblings and cousins. Those are the photographs that will hopefully find themselves framed and hanging on the walls for years to come.

But some of my own favorite images from extended family sessions are always the moments that happen in between. Cousins playing together. Siblings being silly. Kids carrying each other on their backs. And the moments when I look up and just happen to see all of the kids hanging out together on the lifeguard stand.

Those are the moments that feel like real life. The moments when personalities shine through. The moments when we're able to capture not just what someone looks like at this particular age, but a bit of who they are.

We even snuck in a few senior photos for Carter, a rising senior!

When I'm photographing an entire extended family, I always think there's something especially meaningful about that for the grandparents. They get to step back, look at their children and grandchildren all together, and think: All of this is because of us.

A fun part of the night was recreating a photo from their original family session in 2019. And I am very thankful to say it was much easier corralling everyone this time around! There were no parents I had to edit out of the background begging their toddlers to sit still for 30 seconds—and no other parents chasing down a runaway child just outside the frame!

Seven years makes quite a difference!

It's one of the reasons I love photographing families through different seasons of their lives. The photographs change as the kids grow, but so do the relationships, personalities and dynamics that make each family their own!

Thank you guys for welcoming me back once again and trusting me to capture the people you love most. It was such a fun night at Scusset Beach, and I hope you enjoy these images that we created during such a memorable night for your crew!
