Your Location Choice Matters More Than You Think | Providence Photographer

When planning a photo session, one of the biggest decisions you’ll make is where your session will take place. Many clients naturally gravitate toward the beach—and for good reason. Beaches offer open space, soft tones, and light that feels effortless and flattering.
But, not everyone wants a beach section, and the good news is that beaches aren’t the only beautiful option here in New England!.
We’re incredibly fortunate to have access to historic parks and beautiful locations, including Roger Williams Park. Parks can be stunning backdrops for family sessions, senior portraits, and maternity photos—but not all areas within a park photograph the same way.
To explain why location choice matters so much, I often share this example from a session at Roger Williams Park.
We began in an area surrounded by dense pine trees. The subject looked amazing, and the moment itself was beautiful—but notice how dark and heavy the background feels? Pine trees are so tall, dark, and heavy, and when they’re tightly packed, they can visually overpower the subject. The result is an image that feels moodier and more casual, even when everything else is working.
A short walk later, we moved to a more open space within the same park near the Temple to Music. Immediately, the images felt lighter, brighter, and more refined. The background wasn’t competing for attention, and the subject became the clear focus. Even though her outfit changed, the real transformation came from the environment here.
Same person. Same day. Same park. Completely different result!!! It’s a crazy difference, right?!
This is why I place such a strong emphasis on helping every client choose the right location. Whether we’re photographing your family, celebrating a senior year milestone, or documenting pregnancy, the goal is always the same: images that feel intentional, balanced, and timeless.
Parks can absolutely be incredible settings—but the most beautiful images come from choosing areas with open space, visual variety, and elements like pathways, water, or architectural features that break up heavy backgrounds. My role as your photographer is to guide you toward those spots, so your session feels effortless and your images feel elevated.
And if you thought the location transformation was impressive…just * wait * until I help guide you while you choose your outfits. Because while your location choice matters, nothing shapes the overall feel of an image more than thoughtful styling. And lucky for you—I know just the photographer to help with that. 😉
